Inside Out is not just about watching fantastic performances but also about inspiring people to get involved in the arts.

Education, outreach and participatory projects in 2008

In the run-up to this year’s performance by Xarxa Teatre at Weymouth, local people will embark on voyages of discovery inspired by the related themes of Wind and Sails, stories from the sea and extraordinary journeys.  A series of workshops and events in Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth will be inspired by and ignite interest in the Xarxa performance and in the launch of the Cultural Olympiad in Dorset.

Poole

  • Poole Arts Development Unit has partnered up with Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, to offer two weeks of workshops in film, animation and performance for camera at Lighthouse.
  • Open access workshops in July, led by local film maker James Price and visual artist Stella Sargeson, will offer adults and young people opportunities to make work for animations.
  • Wave arts education agency and Aim Higher’s summer school at Lighthouse will enable 40 young people to work with James Price, animator Matthew J Dean and dance and theatre specialist Amanda Byrom to create an animated short film, featuring an extraordinary boat on its very unusual journey to the sea.
  • The films resulting from the Poole workshops will be shown at an event on Poole Quay in September and at Weymouth’s B-Side arts festival.

Bournemouth

  • In September, in partnership with Bournemouth Borough Council Arts Development Team and Wave arts education agency, classes from four local schools (Bethany CE Primary, Elmrise Primary, Kinson Primary and Pokesdown Community Primary) will work to create stories and performances with puppeteer and visual artist Polly Beestone and local theatre practitioner Lee Hart.
  • Support from Bournemouth Borough Council and Borough of Poole means that coaches will bring participants in these projects, and their families, to see Xarxa Teatre at Bowleaze Cove. Elements of the work they have made will be played and/or shown on the journey there.

Weymouth

  • Satellite Arts will be working with a group of looked after children from all over Dorset to create masks and performance. Satellite will also work with a group of children from Royal Manor School, Portland, and with a class from Wyke Regis Junior School to explore this year’s Inside Out themes and produce short performances to be shared within the schools.
  • The animated films and sound recordings resulting from all of these projects will be available via the Inside Out website later in September.
  • Students from Weymouth College will also be documenting this year’s Inside Out events through photography and film.
